St. John Bread and Wine

I wanted to write about this restaurant for a long time because it is in my top 3 list of London eats.

If you want to indulge in fine British Cuisine, go to St John Bread and Wine and you won’t be disappointed.

The
food is lovely and the place and there is some charm in the old
fashioned dining room, with its white high ceilings, copper piping and
bare wooden furniture. It reminds me of those pictures of 1930’s school
mess halls. This is simple yet cosy and comfortable. The staff are
top-notch, very professional and knowledgeable.

The menu is
ideally set up for sharing, not exactly a tapas bar but most starters
and mains are so cheap and varied that you can’t help but getting a lot
of them. To me, It’s a great incentive to try and taste some dishes you
would probably never try otherwise (unless you’re Brit, I mean); among
those feature crispy pig’s skin, nettle soup or parsnip cake.

So,
to be honest, I am not that into pig’s skin, it’s just too fat, chewy
and sticky for my taste. Nevertheless, I’m happy I’ve tried it. The
nettle soup was gorgeous and the parsnip cake a great discovery (to make
at home very soon I’m thinking!)

Then
you have some real jewels. The last time I went I fell in love with a
brilliant beetroot soup (not a surprise for a Beet addict like me). I
loved the horseradish seasoning which really works well with the
beetroot.

You can get the chance to be served some unusual game
on your plate; I was happily surprised with teal. This is a very refined
and juicy meat with a bright pink colour. It was served with a spot-on
parsnip puree.

Alternatively,
there are loads of simple, straightforward dishes like broccoli or
lentils salad…nothing mad, and certainly doable at home , but they won’t
probably taste as good as theirs !

The
menu keeps on changing with the seasons but there are some signature
dishes such as the Eccles cake with cheese, the Bread pudding or the
Madeleines – freshly baked on demand!

I remember a quince sorbet with vodka that I recommend.

As
I said, the price per dish is a real bargain: 7£ on average. At this
price you can afford to spend the big money on the generous wine list.

It is advisable to reserve in advance or face disappointment at the door.

Useful tip :The menu is uploaded each day on their website.
